Renting a car can be a minefield with hidden costs and unfair charges adding up to give the customer a hefty bill.
Eagle-eyed renters are aware they have to double-check the hire agreement so they don't get stung by any hidden extras.
But it is just as important to check the vehicle itself.
One of the most common ways drivers get stung by car rental companies is damage to the car.
That annoying bit where you quickly look around the car is so important.But many renters decide the car looks fine and drives away.
This often ends up with the clients getting back to the rental company to find they've been charged for scratches and dents that had nothing to do with them.
So where should you check?Where are the areas most and least likely to be damaged?
Michael Altom,co-founder ofVirtuo,the mobile only car rental company,said bumpers were the part of the hire vehicle that were normally most damaged.
Allow wheels and the front front doors also received their fair share of bumps and scratches.
The firm collected data from over 6,100 damage reports to find which are the most and least likely areas to be damaged.
The list is as follows:
1: Front bumper 12.69%
2: Rear bumper 12.17%
3: Front alloy 11.97%
4: Front door 8.11%
5: Rear door 7.65%
6: Rear allow wheel 6.19%
7: Hood (bonnet) 5.88%
8: Rear wing 5.14%
9: Front wing 4.00%
10: Front windshield 2.82%
Mr Altom also listed a series of tips designed to make sure drivers avoided any unnecessary charges.
* Checking both exterior and interior (Take pictures of any new damage)
* Check insurance
* Carry any excess protection documents with you
* Double-check with the supplier regarding full tank fuel refunds
* Don't sign any condition report unless you have approved the vehicle
* Check additional charges have been paid
