A Surrey village's only doctor's surgery which was under threat of closure due to financial pressures is to remain open.

An application for the proposed closure ofFetchamMedical Centre was submitted to the Surrey Downs Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) earlier this month due to financial pressures.

However,an announcement made on the surgery's website on Thursday (June 27) revealed the application has now been withdrawn by the contract holder.

The statement reads: "The application proposing closure of the Fetcham branch surgery of the Molebridge practice has been withdrawn by the contract holder.

"As a result both surgery sites,NorthLeatherheadand Fetcham will continue to operate, and there will not be any change to the current provision of services available to patients.

"The practice appreciates the feedback we have received from patients and the local community, and would like to provide reassurance that we will be working with the CCG to ensure we can continue to serve local patients now and in the future."

Councillors Raj Hague and Paul Kennedy outside Fetcham Medical Centre

Mole Valley Liberal Democrats started a petition to retain the surgeryin response to residents' concerns about the proposed closure, and received more than 500 signatures in less than two weeks. It is estimated the petition now has around 1,000 signatures.

Councillor Paul Kennedy, who represents Fetcham West ward, said: "It is wonderful news that the Molebridge closure application has been withdrawn.

"Thanks to everyone who completed the survey, wrote to the CCG,lobbied behind the scenes, signed the petition and went out in the rain to collect signatures. There is still a lot to do to safeguard Fetcham's GP services in the longer term, but this is a great start."

Nikki Mallinder, associate director of primary care commissioning at Surrey Heartlands CCGs,said: "Following successful discussions the application proposing closure of Molebridge Practice in Fetcham has been withdrawn.NHS Surrey Downs CCG will be working with the practice to ensure that they remain sustainable and can continue to serve patients now and for the future.

"Both surgery sites,North Leatherhead and Fetcham will continue to operate and there will not be any change to the services available to patients. We appreciate this matter may have caused concern to patients and the local community and we hope that they will be reassured that there will not be any changes to this GP practice.

"Surrey Heartlands CCGs are committed to supporting GP practices and are working to ensure we maintain primary care facilities for all patients."
